Building Across from St. Paul's Churchyard

from St. Paul's Churchyard looking directly across Vesey Street.
stands an Art Noveau Building with landmark status;
20 Vesey Street.

20 Vesey St. is where the New York Evening Post was located for many years,
so the bulding is known as the Post Building.

make sense so far?

the Post Building was designed by Robert D. Kohn between 1906 & 1907.

we've walked past this building at least a hundred times and never looked up.
this isn't unusual, we tend to keep our eyes on the surrounding herd of commuters,
also we don't want bad boys to mistake us for tourists,
{just too much bother}.

there's a newstand at the sidewalk level of this building,
and in front of the stand there hangs a clock.

THIS clock catches our attention,
and we have taken many photos of said clock,
though we're not posting these pix, 'cause that's not what this post is about.
{ It's About Time has an excellent pic of the clock,
plus more info on the building. take a look}

one day we happen to look up and see this beautiful building
and there are four statues at the ninth floor level just looking back at us.
we KNOW there's a story to the building {in Manhattan every building has a story}.

but we're not in the mood to go looking for it.;
ask us what the statues represent, . . . heck if we know.

however,
over at the Forgotten Delights website,
Dianne Durante, Phd advises us that the statues are meant to be examined from right to left,
and that they represent Four Periods of Publicity:
spoken word, written word, newspapers(?), and printing press.

'tis a little weird and redundant but it beats the blank that WE come up with.

see close-ups and read more detail at Dianne's site

now, we DO know that the statues were designed by Gutzon Borglum .
yep, the same Borglum who designed Mount Rushmore .

so there you have it, when you're in Manhattan,
if you happen to find yourself by Ground Zero,
look for the Post Building, take some pictures,
do some googling & wiking,
post more info, and give a shout-out to here. :-)

finally, we couldn't find a Borglum statement on The Four Periods of Publicity,
but we settled for a statement on his more famous work:

"The purpose of the memorial is to communicate the founding, expansion, preservation, and unification of the United States with colossal statues of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt."

I honestly do not know why my Open ID name comes up with all those numbers and letters. Sorry about that! This time I'll use something else to send this comment and not Open ID.

Wow, surprise after surprise. I loved this post and the facinating discoveries that can be found right around the corner.

If you don't mind being mistaken for a tourist and look up now and then!

har-har-har-dee-har-har, Barry, :-P

lol!

yeah, yer right, Barry, one should always take time to look around. specially if we wanna take pictures. we'll be more cognizant of this in the future. :-)

i gotta tell ya, . . . , true story, . . . today we're walkin' down the street, lookin' at the sidewalk, and there right in front of us we found a nicely folded Jackson. so, . . . guess this means that we should look down every so often as well.

hey, hope yer holdin' up okay, friend. :-0

thanks for the visit,
and for the nice words.

Hey, thanks for the walk down memory lane. It's very nice seeing the details once again. I moved here in 1969! Now I also have a place on the North Fork. It's nice too!

Many thanks for that visual tour and for the commentary. It's great to know about such a marvellous city like New York. I hope to visit it someday.

Greetings from London.

you are very welcome, Cuban,

we think you'll really like New York,
DANCE is big here.

we were interested in the Lindy-hop scene for a while, but its mostly young people and they're really fast and energetic, enough to leave an old man huffin-n-puffin. wethinx you'd like it though. big Salsa scene as well.(lotsa hot-doggin' there as well, *sigh*)

someday we hope to give London a look-see as well.

anyhoo,
visit again soon,
