Storefront on West 8th Street

At one time Greenwich Village was THE counter-cultural edge of NYC. It’s been a half-century since the exodus of artists began, and at least a quarter of a century since yuppification drained the last drop of creative lifeblood from this neighborhood.

Today that edge has moved, as it usually does, to neighborhoods where the "professional" dread to tread. Not a problem.

Some folk make "things": art, music, furniture, food, et al,

Other folk make money. Nothing wrong with this . . . until they marry, that is.

Anyhoo, The Village still thrives as a theme park: Bohemia Land, and attracts many; not just tourists.

Thanks to New York University, The New School and other centers of higher learning Academia is abundant . . .

And, KEG 101 is the course of study de la noche. Rainbow yawning has been elevated to an art form, please watch where you step. And only piss BETWEEN cars not on the sidewalk if you please.

All of which brings us to today’s pix. Small businesses thrive by selling facsimiles of what you'd expect in "THE VILLAGE".

Storefronts can get very colorful and attractive and here's one such storefront that caught our eye.

Storefronts are interesting.
Change seems to be the rule. I would love to watch a storefront and see how often the display changes...

paints and prints. that's my hood an I have no idea where that is!

BES< thanks for your comments over at my place. And hey, I failed that test too. Scored 15. I guess that's it, I don't frequent all the trendy places so I don't "belong" I was born in Detroit, but have been in NYC since 86. Crap, I paid my dues. This city has been robbed of its soul, but we hang tough, like real New Yorkers!

hi Ken,

NYC has always welcomed folk from the world over, so truly everyone and anyone that wants to be here, belongs here.

this has never been an issue other than the usual clannish/tribal territoriality that we've come to expect everywhere in the world that cultures clash.

the troublesome issue today is the type of economic apartheid that the administration is enforcing through re-zoning that is forcing the art community, working families, and small businesses to flee the city,

these refugees are then replaced by the bland, homogenized, and banal uber-trendoid and big-box businesses that have destroyed small towns all across America.

yeah, there's still the Broadway show, but the hoofer who works as a waitress between shows now has to live farther and farther away in order to afford the rent.

proof that you have paid your dues
is your wonderful chronicle
of our city, and its always a pleasure
to visit your GREENWICH VILLAGE DAILY PHOTO

thank you for taking the time out to stop by

:-)

i kind of ride the border between professional and crazy artist. i find the value in both...even during the times when both are hard to love.

i don't like to think in terms of us versus them. we. we. we. us.

its been a true pleasure to visit your vesper in limbo , we WILL be visiting often.

we agree, kumba-ya, that WE is the preferred relation. however, you can't make an omelet without braking a few eggs.
