14th Street, Union Square, NYC

given it's central location,
is a favored meeting spot
. . . perfect for people watching,
bike and skate meets,
playing chess,
or just plain hanging out.

we jazzed these pix a bit,
hope you enjoy them.

NEW YORK, May 24, '79.—
. . .that area comprising Fourteenth street
(especially the short range between Broadway and Fifth avenue)
with Union square, its adjacencies,
and so retrostretching down Broadway for half a mile.

All the walks here are wide, and the spaces ample and free
—now flooded with liquid gold from the last two hours of powerful sunshine.

The whole area at 5 o'clock, the days of my observations,
must have contain'd from thirty to forty thousand finely-dress'd people,
all in motion, plenty of them good-looking,
many beautiful women, often youths and children,
the latter in groups with their nurses
—the trottoirs everywhere close-spread,
thick-tangled, (yet no collision, no trouble,)
with masses of bright color, action, and tasty toilets;
(surely the women dress better than ever before, and the men do too.)

As if New York would show these afternoons what it can do in its humanity,
its choicest physique and physiognomy,
and its countless prodigality of locomotion,
dry goods, glitter, magnestism, and happiness.

1st things 1st: YEA! You're Back!!
I've missed you!
2nd: loved this post. I've never been to NY...love the pics of the city, and Whitman's words...and Ghandi's presence to remind us, we are all beggars on this earth.

Lovely!

Hope you had a great time off. I've never been to NYC. I hear it's exciting. I fear I'd be claustrophobic there but I love the photos.

It's been many years since I've been to NYC. Your pictures brought back memories and showed many changes from what I remember.
Thanks for visiting my site.

Wow. Amazing moments captured digitally. It's a flurry of life and activity. I haven't been to NYC but it is on my list of places to go before I die (obviously because after dying, there are only two or three places to go...but I digress.)

Michele,
the City CAN be an intimidating experience, fortunately there IS a balance (isn't there always?). :-)

you c'mon over and vist our town, you'll likely not be disappointed,
its become a sorta theme park of what it used to be, but there's still enough attitude left to make
it special.

thanks for stopping by,
Michele.

and DO visit again.

Oh so true! Meeting spot indeed. I was just there over the weekend meeting friends for brunch.
I spotted a guy with a banner that said "Free Hugs!".
Don't you think there should be a kissing spot somewhere in the park?

Girl,
kissing on the grass, of course. :-)
