Department of Homeless Services NYC
many years ago, during the Reagan years when
trickle down economics forced many families
onto the streets of New York,
we began taking photos of the homeless
on our streets.
occasionally, we post these pics,
with the latest demographic info.
this image shows one such indigent
sleeping on the sidewalk in front
of a department store in the
Greenwich Village's Astor Place.
however, all is not as it appears,
the running shoes, and duffle,
would indicate an undercover cop.
maybe, maybe not. :-0
however, many years of street lore
would support the theory.
this is not to say that there ARE no homeless;
almost nine thousand families are homeless
in the city.
:-(

9,000. Wow. Reminds me of the addage,
"There, but for the grace of God, go I."
Today I will be grateful for a warm house and food. Thank you for the reminder.
you got it, Momza.
yes, we SHOULD be thankful.

Years ago we bought a tent and a couple of decent sleeping bags for "just in case".
I would have never been able to tell the difference between an undercover cop and a street person. I'm a bit naive
well Michele,
ye CAN get away with camping in one of the parks,
but we wouldn't recommend it,
the odds of a safe night are stacked
against ye.
as for the cop, well maybe he's NOT.
that bag, though, its pretty attractive, sorta like the cadets get at the Academy,
we'd bet its bait.
or, maybe we're just paranoid, blame it on a misspent youth. :-)

I have had to shoot hundreds of homeless people since 1985 for news stories. It is sad situation.
Though sad, your photo is very good. Thank you for reminding people how lucky they are.
Quite strange!
Elephant Statue [Decorated]
It is sad. But for some reason, he does not seem like a homeless man. Check out that paraphernalia.
Hmmm..could it be that he just passed out from too much drinking? Hangover?
Great shot!
- Patty, our pleasure. :-)
-Bhavesh, yes indeed. :-0
- Girl, initially we had the same impression, and then saw something else.
