Happy Birthday Stardust

we named her Stardust
 after the Joni Mitchell song:

We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

poor kid she's  a hippies' child
and like others of that generation
she would soon grow tired
hearing about how great the sixties were.

and like every generation before and since
she saw the hipocrisy in ours.

when she entered college
she told us that our generation had sold out.

 she was almost right.

we'd gone from selling Peace, Love and Hope
 to selling used cars.

she discovered and turned us on to The Grapes of Wrath.

she understood that there was something
 uneven in the playing field
and that the future needed our help.

we accepted the gift as if for the first time,
and through her eyes it was.

as she entered adulthood she explored,
 we sensed the restlessness
and recognized the thirst for knowledge and change
that propelled us in our own youth.

yet in her it was somehow different,
 non-dogmatic, open to new interpretations.

 more importantly applicable to,
and symbiotic with, the larger world.

as we age she shephards us to draw,
 write, dance, volunteer;
enthusiastically urging us to live, live, live
. . . and in this way connects us with our youth once again.

we named her Stardust
with a hope for the future embodied in a new generation,
 and Stardust she is.

today is her birthaday and we love her.

Happy Birthday, little girl.

love, dad.

 Lyrics: Joni Mitchel

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, "Where are you going?"
And this he told me...

I'm going on down to Yasgur's Farm,
I'm gonna join in a rock and roll band.
I'm gonna camp out on the land.
I'm gonna get my soul free.

We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Then can I walk beside you?
I have come here to lose the smog,
And I feel to be a cog in something turning.

Well maybe it is just the time of year,
Or maybe it's the time of man.
I don't know who I am,
But you know life is for learning.

We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And Everywhere there was song and celebration.

And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky,
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust.
Billion year old carbon.
We are golden..
Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

(To some semblance of a garden.)
