NYC Cultural Calendar | 10 Unmissable Art Events in Summer 2014:

 "Culture | Celebrate Brooklyn!

June - August

Founded in 1979, Celebrate Brooklyn! is one of New York City’s longest-running, free outdoor festivals and in its 35-year history the event has hosted performances – ranging from music and dance to theatre and spoken word – by over 2,000 artists reflective of Brooklyn’s cultural diversity. Celebrate Brooklyn! was launched with the dual purpose of establishing a performing arts scene in Brooklyn while helping to regenerate the neglected Prospect Park, where much of the festival takes place, and has become one of the city’s most popular cultural attractions drawing in around 250,000 visitors each year. Music performances this year come from R&B sensation Janelle Monae and recently reformed bluegrass band Nickel Creek, while the festival’s dance parties, held at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, will include sets from Israeli electronic outfit Balkan Beat Box and DJ JD Samson.

Opening Reception – Greetings From The City of New York | City Reliquary:

"The exhibit is curated by Lon Black whose interest in postcards began in his early teens. All the postcards featured in the exhibit are from his personal collection. He started collecting New York City views after moving here 32 years ago.

Always looking for the unusual or rare postcard, his focus was acquiring images he had never seen. But in the past several years, he has paid more attention to the words or pictures that people wrote on the images of the undivided back cards."

New York State Caravan of Corruption – Manhattan | NYC General Assembly # Occupy Wall Street: "CARAVAN OF CORRUPTION – MANHATTAN

The Travelling Caravan of Corruption tour stops in Manhattan. Come to Foley Square at 5:30pm on Tuesday, October 23 to learn the history of the last ten years of corruption in our state government.

For decades, New York has been home to some of the nation’s most crooked, conniving and corrupt politicians. They’ve accepted favors, dodged taxes, and lined their pockets with taxpayers’ cash. Enough is enough.

From Buffalo to Brooklyn, and everywhere in between, we’re taking our creepshow on the road to show what happens when we don’t hold greedy politicians accountable for their actions.

Step right up and learn about this collection of crooks as they:

Siphon money from community programs to buy Yankees tickets
Spend over $20,000 of taxpayers’ dollars on sushi
Dodge hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes
Buy luxury apartments with public money"
